Derek Mc Garry

Derek McGarry is a studio designer maker living and working in Dublin. Having completed an extensive education in Ireland and the USA, McGarry began his design and teaching career in California. McGarry’s work has been shown internationally and has been purchased for permanent collections including the National Museum of Ireland and Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, Dublin. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and had his work selected for many high profile international group exhibitions. In May 2011, a three dimensionally printed brooch designed and made by McGarry was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit to Ireland.

Sarah Mooney-Wiegersma

Sarah is a recent graduate of ceramics at NCAD, and will be showing some of her newest work in the show.

Rachel Swan

Amazing new jewellery by Rachel Swan will be on show in this year's exhibition.

Rachel is a goldsmith, based in Rua Red Arts Centre in south county Dublin. She entered the crafts industry through the traditional route of an apprenticeship, and in 2008 launched her own range of contemporary jewellery. She makes hollow formed three-dimensional pieces, inspired by modern architecture and sculpture.

Catherine Keenan

The first sneak peek at some work that will be in the show.................

County Antrim based glass artist, Catherine Keenan, graduated from the glass department of NCAD in 2006. She then went on to study at the International Glass centre, West Midlands in the UK, specialising in glass blowing and cold decoration and carving.

This year we are concentrating on ceramics, glass and metals. The selection of designers is still being finalised, but you can see who is involved so far on the Designers page.
The show will take place in No. 28 South William Street, Dublin 2, launcing on Wednesday 2nd November.

Design tree opens!

The last few days have been a bit mad, hence our lack of posting new blogs. But we are happy to report that the exhibition has been a great success!
Good friend of Irish Design shop, Brian Masterson, was on hand at the opening to photograph all the goings on, check out the results on Brian's blog:

Finally, tomorrow is the last day of the show, and to mark the occasion, we will be screening the classic Hands series. Be sure to drop by for tea and cake (courtesy of Catherine's Bakery, Meath street) if you're in the area, we will be open from 10 am.

As the opening night of the show draws closer, panic will eventually set in. However we are happy to report that we have received all work and have begun displaying it. Pictured, we have Hugo Thompson's piano bench and light. We abandoned him last night as he was only beginning to install his record shelf, so he could still be there.
The to do list gets longer by the hour, but we are lucky to have such wonderful friends and exhibitors all offering their help. Depending how things go, we hope to make an appearance at the cream of Irish design show on the North circular road, so we wish them all the best and hope everything is sorted for their opening night!
One unfortunate bit of news we have is that our list of 30 exhibitors is now down to 29. Leo Scarff has had to drop out of the show, but sure these things happen!

Bags, Boxes & Bubblewrap

It has been a busy Saturday so far, with deliveries arriving in all day. And of course, anyone who was dropping off their work was roped into a bit of painting!

Seeing as this has turned into a race, we can let you know all of the people that havent come last so far............
After Olga Tiernan winning first place on the 27th, Naomi Fry, Eoin Glavey, Sheenagh Green, Eoin M Lyons, Sarah McEvoy, Justyna Truchanowska and Filip Vanas all got their work in to us on Thursday 28th. Friday was quieter with just Theresa Burger, Andrew Ludick and Rosemary Naughton's work arriving on site. We are hoping the rest is on its way this afternoon after Yvonne Beale, James Carroll, Cianan Doyle, Duneavy Bespoke, Locker 13, Eoghain O'Brien, Lisa Ryder and Jenny Walsh dropped off this morning. So the pile of boxes, and bags filled with a variety of amazing hand crafted items is growing slowly but surely.

A big Thank You to Shane and Karl from Locker 13 and Lisa Ryder for all their help with the painting this morning, the plinths and walls are looking lovely!

Lonely chairs

So the first day for dropping off work to the exhibition space has come and gone, yet the only work dropped off was by the lovely Olga Tiernan, who 'likes to be early'.
So, spare a thought for her lovely chairs (€95 each or she will do a deal on the 2!) as they spend the night alone holding out hope that more objects will soon join them.
Not unlike a marathon, we will be listing designers times and days of drop off. So, Olga has won, ah, but who will be last! I've got money riding on Cianan Doyle who was complaining about some form of chest infection earlier while pleading for an extension, 'is Wednesday out of the question' he begged, well, I told him!
Stay tuned for more designers times over the coming days, a reluctant breed however where photos are concerned, I had imagined all sorts of exciting snaps of smiling craft workers arriving with craft in hand! Not to be, although I only have a reluctant Miss Tiernan as an example.

So just to wrap things up, we would like to congratulate Olga who came in at approx 12.01 pm on Wednesday the 27th of October

What it's all about....

Our aim with this exhibition is to display the variety of design led craft and furniture being produced in Ireland today. The challenge of creating an identity for Irish design links us all.
While appreciating our heritage as a nation deeply rooted in craft we wish to develop and further these skills to compete on an international level.
Similar concerns connect us all such as the economic climate and sustainability in terms of materials and production.
However, our exhibition demonstrates hope for the future in the form of well crafted pieces of furniture and craft displaying the individual aesthetic of each maker while also illustrating the vibrancy and accessibility of Irish design.

Installing begins!

With just over 2 weeks to go until the craft exhibition of the century we are delighted to announce that we have started moving things into the exhibition space.
At a snails pace it may be, however stacks of plinths offloaded in an exhibition space is totally justifiable as 'making a start at installing'.
Also, terribly exciting image, it would have been a shame not to post it on the blog.
Many thanks to the Craft Council for kindly lending us the plinths!

Here is just a taste of what will be exhibited as part of 'Design Tree'. 30 makers are involved from various disciplines such as glass, ceramics, metal and furniture design. The venue for the show is at Moxie studios, just off Baggot Street. This amazing warehouse in the heart of Dublin city comprises 5 gallery spaces, which will provide a great space to display all thirty maker's work

New designer added to Design Tree exhibition

Kilkenny based ceramicist Andrew Ludick has become our 30th exhibitor in the show! We spotted his work in the current issue of House and Home magazine and got to work tracking him down. Andrew hand builds his pieces using white earthenware clay, which are then decorated with coloured slips. He uses several hand building techniques to create a blank canvas to which he applies patterns and decoration before coating with a glossy clear glaze, thus ensuring that each piece is a unique work of art in both its shape and decoration.

Dublin illustrator Dave Comiskey has just completed his 'info graphic' (his term, not ours) for the Design Tree exhibition. We will be sure to print it on all available mediums to publicise the event.
